This spectacular tour, to be held on Monday 11 and Tuesday 19 May explores every aspect of the region’s most important asset, its water - from the stunning wildlife surrounds of the Ord River and Lake Argyle, to the intricate irrigation systems used by local growers to harvest the region’s agriculture.

The full-day tour includes lunch, afternoon tea, river cruise, coach tour, expert commentary from the team at the Ord Irrigation Cooperative, visits to working farms and much more.

Plus, you’ll learn how the Royalties for Regions scheme and the proposed Ord Stage 2 development will see the Ord irrigation area double in size to 30,000ha in the next five years, providing growth opportunities for existing businesses, as well as opening the door for investment in new agricultural industries.

Argyle Diamond Mine Tour

Alongside the East Kimberley’s wealth of natural wonders is one of the state’s most unique tourist attractions - Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine.

To support the local tourism industry, the Argyle diamond mine is offering this special tour, providing visitors with a rare insight into the scope of a large mining operation and the history of its relationship with the Traditional Owners. As the world’s largest supplier of diamonds, Argyle produces approximately 20 million carats each year. This is your chance to witness first hand the mining techniques used to unearth the stunning white, champagne and highly-prized pink diamonds synonymous with Argyle.

This event will also be held on Tuesday May 12 and Thursday May 14 & 21.

Graves in the Long Grass

Spend the morning walking through the long grass, reflecting on life in the East Kimberley last century.

Wendy Carter, Secretary of the Kununurra Historical Society, will escort you to three graves on the famous Ivanhoe Station, introducing you to the history of the Durack family and the writings of Mary Durack. After exploring the remnants of the old station, morning tea will be served on the veranda of the present Ivanhoe Station, courtesy of hosts Alison and Rod McComb, followed by a visit to Dave Suttee’s grave at Capsize Creek. Suttee was the head stockman and ‘bushman of the old type’ wonderfully characterised as Dan in Mrs Aeneas Gunn’s novel We of the Never Never.

Although the two-kilometre walk is mainly on level ground, you will need a reasonable level of fitness and agility to climb over fallen tree branches and negotiate potholes along bush pathways. Water bottle, sturdy footwear, hat, and sunscreen or long sleeves are essential.

A Look Back in Time

Kununurra might be recognised as Western Australia’s newest town (gazetted 1961), however its history dates back to 1882 when Irish born Patrick (Patsy) Durack settled in the area, travelling 3,000 kilometres from Queensland with his 7250 head of cattle and 200 horses to establish Ivanhoe Station.

The Kununurra Historical Society Museum features a wealth of little-known facts about the region, its famous identities and rich, colourful past. Join the Historical Society Members for a coffee each Tuesday of the Muster as they recount the history of the Kimberley.
